To the digital innovation and research initiatives that have made the Internet catalyze change in Latin America and the Caribbean

Rules for participation

  1. Any innovation or research project or initiative in the field of ICTs within the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region that, since 2007, has significantly contributed to the use of the internet as a catalyst for change in Latin America and the Caribbean. may be nominated for the FRIDA/IGF2011 award.
  2. The initiative must be aimed at one or more of the following four areas:
    1. Access – this includes initiatives that expanded fixed and mobile access to the internet through new forms of technical and organizational arrangements as well as improve the quality of access based on issues of accessibility, disability and linguistic diversity.
    2. Freedoms – this includes initiatives related to freedom of expression, freedom of association, privacy, security, consumer’s rights, new forms of intellectual property in the digital environment and a wider range of issues related to internet and human rights.
    3. Development –This includes initiatives that use the internet to contribute directly to the solution of environmental and socio–economic challenges. It is such as education, health, access to finance and environmental conditions.
    4. Innovation – Includes initiatives that introduced technical innovation on any aspect related with Internet development, ranging from physical to conceptual. Among others, it includes innovation in materials, devices, standards for software and content, as well as aspects related to development of the semantic web.
  3. The initiative must have tangible results available at the time of presenting the awards (proposals and projects in their initial stages of development will not be considered).
  4. Five awards will be given to nominated projects and initiatives, being one award for each of the four thematic areas (see above) and one award for for the best 2.0 campaign (Most voted project).  The prizes will consist of a USD 3,000 cash prize as well as travel and accommodation for one representative of each award-winning project to attend the award ceremony (October 2011 in Argentina) and to the IGF 2011 (September 2011 in Kenya). The jury reserves the right to declare certain prizes vacant.
  5. Prizes will be presented during the ceremony to be held at the LACNIC XVI meeting which will take place on 3-7 October 2011 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Award-winners will have the possibility of presenting their initiative within the framework of this meeting.
  6. Proposals must clearly identify all participating institutions as well as the project leader who, if applicable, will receive the cash prize and the invitation to participate in the event. In case of controversy regarding the project leader, all the organizations involved in the proposal will be consulted in order to appoint the leader of the project and/or initiative.
  7. The applicant must provide the following documentation:

      2. Links to videos, photographs and documents considered relevant and that help describe the initiative can be uploaded at http://premiofrida.org.
      3. If deemed necessary, the jury may request additional information.
      4. Nominations are open from June 20 to August 5, 2011.
  8. Voting will be conducted on line (see the following link: http://premiofrida.org/eng/projects). Each website visitor may vote for several initiatives, but may cast only vote for each one. Applicants should spread the word about their candidacies in order to obtain the votes of their peers. On-line voting will be held from June 20 to August 19, 2011 and will be conducted at the following website: http://premiofrida.org/eng/projects

Important Note: The projects should make a voting campaign for stakeholders to vote from the FRIDA Award site. Those projects seeking votes in other ways than the prescribed in the regulations will be withdrawn from the contest.

  1. The jury is made up by five ICT experts from the region of Latin America and the Caribbean. The jury's decision will be made public on September 5th, 2011.
  2. During the evaluation process, the jury will take into consideration the following elements: number of votes received by each initiative; quality and merits of the initiative; interest of their results from a regional perspective; geographical distribution of the proposals and distribution among the subject areas established.
  3. The applicant is responsible for the legitimacy of intellectual property rights for the contents provided. Any such violation shall be notified to contest organizers via email copyright@premiofrida.org
  4. The website administrator reserves the right to withdraw unilaterally the content that he considers to be offensive, incorrect or that might be violating copyright. Registering for the prize implies acceptance of these rules for participation and the rights and obligations deriving therefrom.
